Roulette is a very simple game to learn and play, which is a big reason why so many people are attracted to this exciting casino game. But before you even consider jumping straight into the game, you need to understand the basics of the game. The aim of roulette is to correctly pick the winning number, group of numbers, or color, which the ball will land on.
At the start of the game, players have a specific amount of time to place their bets on the roulette layout table. These bets consist of inside bets and outside bets.
Roulette Inside Bets
An inside bet is a type of bet where players place wagers on numbers they believe will win in the inside of the roulette table. This includes straight up bets on individual numbers, but there are variations of inside bets, including split bets, street bets, corner bets, and trio bets. Players have the opportunity to wager a single chip on a group of numbers, although the payout odds become less appealing the more numbers you bet on because the wager amount is divided by all the numbers you’re picking to win.
Roulette Outside Bets
An outside bet is a wager which is placed on a larger group of numbers on the outside section of the Roulette table. This includes wagering on red and black, odd or even numbers, 1 to 18 and 19 to 36, dozens, and columns.
The roulette table contains 38 individual slots for the ball to land in, the numbers run from 1 to 36. It also includes a 0 or 00 (double zero if playing American Roulette), with the numbers alternating between red and black. The online American roulette tables have a higher house edge because of the double zero.
There are three sections on the table, and players may bet on any single number or a combination of numbers in the designated betting areas on the felt (1st 12, 2nd 12, and 3rd 12). Even though the odds of outside bets are far less appealing than inside bets, the chances of winning are much greater. A straight up inside bet, in which you bet on a single number will pay 35 to 1. If you’re betting 12 numbers (a third of the wheel) the payout is 2 to 1, for example. So, if you were to bet $1 on the 1st 12 numbers, and the roulette wheel hit 8, you would win $3 ($2 + $1 you bet.)
Once all the players have completed their bets, the roulette wheel is rotated in one direction to roll the ball. When the spinning wheel eventually comes to rest the ball will have found its way onto one of the numbered slots on the wheel to determine the winning number. Players who have placed their bets on this number win an amount based on the payout odds.
