Mark Mulder was one of the best pitchers in baseball during the early Aughts. Turns out he’s pretty good at golf, too. Mulder is the two-time and reigning titleholder at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, and he’s the +400 favorite to make it three in a row starting this Friday. Tony Romo (+425) and Mardy Fish (+550) are the other top contenders.
It’s very rare for a non-athlete to win this three-round tournament; soap opera star Jack Wagner (+1400 at Bovada) is the only one to accomplish this feat since the inaugural event in 1990, and he did it twice, in 2006 and 2011. That’s bad news for Justin Timberlake (+6600), a 4-handicap golfer who will play Lake Tahoe for the third straight year.
Romo and Fish have yet to win the Classic, but Romo is a 0-handicapper who has plenty of time for golf now that he’s no longer the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. So does Fish, who retired from the men’s tennis circuit in 2015; he was an avid golfer growing up, and he won the Celebrity division at last year’s Diamond Resorts Invitational – before finishing second behind Mulder this year.
