Millions of people will be tuning in this Sunday (8:30 PM ET, ABC) to see what the world’s biggest movie stars have to say about the current state of affairs – and to see who takes home the hardware at the 89th Academy Awards. It’s widely assumed that La La Land will win the Oscar for Best Picture; the Emma Stone-Ryan Gosling musical is a –700 chalk at press time.
There’s a chance that Moonlight (+550 at Bovada) will sneak away with Best Picture, but if not, the critically-acclaimed film is a near-lock at –700 to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. One of the movie’s top stars, Mahershala Ali, is also a heavy –700 favorite to win Best Supporting Actor.
The race for Best Actor is much closer. It’s a two-way battle between Manchester by the Sea leading man Casey Affleck (–160) and Fences actor/director Denzel Washington (EVEN). Affleck won the Critics’ Choice and BAFTA awards in the same category, while Washington was the choice of the Screen Actors Guild. Emma Stone is a –700 favorite to win the Best Actress Oscar for her work in La La Land, well ahead of Jackie star Natalie Portman at +500.
